What to wear to a Bridal Appointment: Expert tips from Perfect Day

You’ve booked your bridal appointment at Perfect Day—exciting! But now you’re staring at your wardrobe wondering, “What on earth do I wear to try on wedding dresses?”

Don’t worry. After styling thousands of brides across Northern Ireland over the past 20 years, our expert consultants know exactly what works (and what doesn’t). Here’s your complete guide to dressing for your bridal appointment.

The Golden Rule: Comfort First

Your bridal appointment should be relaxed, fun, and pressure-free. What you wear plays a big part in that. Choose clothing that makes you feel confident and allows you to move easily—you’ll be slipping in and out of dresses, twirling in front of mirrors, and (hopefully!) saying yes to the dress.

What to Wear: The Perfect Appointment Outfit

Keep It Simple & Easy to Remove

·       Fitted top or bodysuit in a neutral colour (nude, black, or white)

·       Leggings, slim trousers, or a simple skirt that’s easy to step out of

·       Seamless underwear in nude or a colour close to your skin tone

·       Strapless or multiway bra (essential!)—this lets you see how different necklines will look on your wedding day

Pro tip: Avoid anything with lots of buttons, zips, or complicated fastenings. You’ll be changing multiple times, and simple clothing speeds up the process (and keeps the magic flowing!).

Footwear That Works

·       Heels close to your wedding day height if you know it—this helps you see the dress length and proportions accurately

·       Slip-on shoes or ankle boots for easy on-and-off

·       Nude or neutral colours so they don’t distract from the dress

Hair & Makeup

·       Hair up or half-up so you can see necklines, backs, and shoulder details clearly

·       Light, natural makeup that makes you feel like yourself (save the full glam for the big day!)

·       Avoid high ponytails or buns—they can get in the way when trying on dresses

What to Avoid

Tight or Restrictive Clothing

Bodycon dresses, tight jeans, or anything that’s hard to wriggle out of will slow you down and make the experience less enjoyable.

Bold Patterns or Bright Colours

You want the focus on the wedding dress, not your outfit. Stick to neutral tones so you (and your entourage) can really see the dress in all its glory.

Complicated Underwear

This isn’t the time for your everyday bra or underwear with visible lines. A strapless bra and seamless knickers in a nude shade are your best friends.

Heavy Perfume or Fake Tan

Wedding dresses are delicate, and strong scents or fresh fake tan can transfer onto the fabric. Keep it light and let the dresses stay pristine for the next bride!

What to Bring

·       Your strapless or multiway bra (we can’t stress this enough!)

·       Heels if you have them

·       Hair tie or clips to keep hair off your face

·       An open mind—the dress you think you want might surprise you!

·       Your entourage (but keep it small—2-3 trusted opinions max)

FAQs

Do I need to bring my own bra?

Yes! A strapless or multiway bra in nude is essential so you can see how different necklines will look.

Can I wear jeans to my appointment?

We’d recommend something easier to remove, like leggings or a skirt, but if jeans make you feel comfortable, that’s okay too—just keep them simple!

Should I do my hair and makeup?

Light, natural makeup and hair up or half-up works best so you can see the dress details clearly.

What if I don’t have heels?

No problem! We have a box which we use .

How many people should I bring?

2-3 trusted opinions max. Too many voices can make decision-making harder!
